PETERSON CLAIMS TITLES AT TWO DIFFERENT MEETS; SEDBROOK BREAKS SCHOOL 5K RECORD

Members of the University of Minnesota Duluth track team competed in one and/or two meets over the weekend and among those was Josh Peterson, who claimed a title at both the University of St. Thomas Showcase Friday and the Yellowjacket Open the following afternoon.

Peterson, a native of Cold Spring, Minn., finished first in the mile run Friday, clocking in at 4:19.02 (just ahead of runnerup and fellow UMD sophomore Grant Pulver; 4:21.68) and then prevailed in the 800-meter run at the Lydia Thering Fieldhouse on the University of Wisconsin-Superior campus. The Bulldogs produced another champion in sophomore Henry Jessen in the 3,000-meter run (8:43.83). Freshman Kyle Kabanuk was the other Bulldog to post a first-place finish at the St. Thomas Showcase, doing so in the 21-competitor long jump (21'-06.75"). Another UMD highlight occurred in the 5,000-meter run where sophomore Cody Sedbrook ran a school-record 14:43.93, breaking the old mark set of 14:54.15 set by Robb Winterfeld in 2004.) That NCAA II provisional qualifying performance placed Sedbrook seventh among 38 runners. Sophomore Nate Comer took third  in the 800-meter run and like Peterson, Pulver, Jessen, Kabanuk and Sedbrook, established a personal best (1:58.83).

Five individuals and one relay unit captured crowns at the Yellowjacket Open. In addition to Peterson, the group included junior Jason Lilja in the high jump (6'-.06.75"), senior Mark Emlaw in the long jump (22'-00.75"), sophomre Zach Vieau in the triple jump (41'-11.25") and junior Brian Lee in the weight throw (58'-09.25"). UMD freshman Andrew Lind wound up second to Lilja (6'-02.75"). Comer, sophomores Austin Carlson and Darrick Jackson, and junior Boston Braack, brought home the 4 x 400 meter run title.

A selected number of Bulldogs will take part in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Indoor Heptathlon Championships, which start tomorrow and run through Monday at Minnesota State University-Mankato.
