Breanna Colbenson had herself quite a stay at the prestigious Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa.
The University of Minnesota Duluth junior All-American took second in the 5,000-meter run Thursday and then two days later ran off with the 3,000-meter steeplechase title. In both events, which included runners from the NCAA Division I, II and II ranks, she posted school record times -- 10:21.11 in the steeplechase (the third fastest clocking in the nation at the moment) and 16:28.38 in the 24-person 5,000-meter race. Senior All-American
Hannah Olson finished right behind Colbenson in the steeplechase, coming in at 10.26.06. Colbenson owned the previous Bulldog 3,000-meter steeplechase record of 10:23.31, which she set two weeks ago at the Mt. SAC Relays in Norwalk, Calif., while Sam Rivard had set the 5,000-meter run mark of 16:29.73 (2013 Drake Relays).
The remainder of the Bulldogs collectively turned in a strong showing at Saturday's Drake Alternative in St. Peter, Minn. UMD received twelve Top-3 individual finishes, included first-place efforts from freshman
Danielle Kohlwey in the 100-meter hurdles (14.15 - a Gustavus Adolphus College Track and Field Complex record), sophomore
Erica Kesseh in the 100-meter dash (12.41) and freshman
Elizabeth Brunner in the triple jump (37'-10.50"). Senior
Erica Seidenkranz (1,500-meter run; 4:53.89), freshman
Lorna Meyer (400-meter hurdles; 1:07.60) and senior
Lydia Kingsley (hammer throw; 164'-11") all took second in their respective events while Brunner (long jump; 16'-05.00'), Meyer (100-meter hurdles; 15.56), freshman
Allie Stalboerger (200-meter dash; 26.04), sophomore
Rachelle LeBlanc (pole vault; 11'-00.25"), freshman
Cassidy Baker (shot put; 37'-09.50") and junior
Courtney Ryan (javelin; 108'-11") generated third-place finishes. In addition, the quartet of Meyer, Kesseh, Kohlwey and Stalboerger prevailed in the 4 x 100 relay.
Senior All-American
Chanel Miller will be UMD's sole representative at the two-day NSIC Outdoor Heptathlon Championships, which get underway on Sunday (May 1) at Minnesota State University-Mankato. Miller was the NSIC heptathlon titleholder in both 2013 and 2014, but sat out last year as a medical redshirt.
UMD will be in Winona, Minn., next Saturday (May 7) for the Winona State University Open with the NSIC Outdoor Track and Field Championships scheduled for the following weekend.
