With point contributions coming from a dozen different individuals, the University of Minnesota Duluth closed the books on the 2016 season by finishing eighth in the 12-team Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Sioux Falls, S.D.
Minnesota State University-Mankato won the team title with 166.5 points while the Bulldogs accumulated 45 points.
Freshmen
Isaac Overmyer, in his NSIC outdoor meet debut, posted the highest individual finish of any Bulldog at the two-day event as he took third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:40.67.
Frank Deluca came in fourth in the 400-meter dash (50.42) while fellow sophomores
Blake Anderson (31:34.01 in the 10,000-meter run) and
Logan Rubeck (48.06 meters in the javelin throw) each turned in fifth-place finishes. Other UMD point producers included sophomore
Connor Behm in the 200-meter dash (22.28), senior
Kern Wilson in the hammer throw (6th place; 51.76 meters), sophomore
Alex Naughton in the 1,500-meter run (7th place; 4:03.46), sophomore
Henry Jessen in the 5,000-meter run (7th place; 15;16.68), senior
Joey Erickson in the 1,500-meter run (8th place; 4:05.42), and freshman
Ryan Tolkinen in the 400-meter hurdles (8th place; 1:03.53). Senior
James Ryan, who 12 days ago captured runnerup honors at the NSIC Outdoor Decathlon Championships, teamed with Deluca, Behm and sophomore
Austin Carlson to run a 3:21.18 in the 4 x 400 relay, good for fourth place.
Overmyer was the lone Bulldog to attain All-NSIC status (a top-three finish in any individual event or top-two placing in a relay race).
