An offensive onslaught, beating the full-court press, and rebounding helped the University of Minnesota Duluth with an 83-73 victory over Minnesota State University-Mankato. Before tonight, the Bulldogs had lost seven straight Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference tournament games dating back to March 6, 2010, when they beat Concordia University St. Paul, 80-73.
Coming into the game, UMD (14-13; 11-11 NSIC) was last in the conference in rebounding, compared to MSU (16-11; 12-10 NSIC) which was first at an average of 43.9 rebounds per game. The Bulldogs out-rebounded the Mavericks 35-33.Â
After taking a 15-10 lead with 3:29 left in the first quarter, UMD allowed MSU to rip off a 14-0 run to end the quarter with a 24-15 deficit. After going 1-of-3 from beyond the arc in the first quarter, senior guard
Jenna Orr would then put on an offensive spectacle, hitting six three-pointers in the second quarter. In a span of just 1:35, Orr would score four straight three-pointers for the Bulldogs.
Orr would go on to shatter her previous career-high of 13 points, leading all scorers with 32 points on 11-of-21 shooting. The Rice Lake, Wis. native knocked down eight three-pointers on 17 attempts -- both of which are record-highs in NSIC Tournament play.Â
UMD shot 48.2 percent, good for their third-highest mark of the season, on 27-of-56 shooting. Sophomore guard
Sammy Kozlowski paced all players with nine rebounds and six assists.
The Bulldogs would tie a program record with 13 made three-pointers on the night.Â
UMD will hit the road to take on Wayne State College (22-6; 16-6 NSIC) on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at the Sanford Health Pentagon.Â
