History did indeed repeat itself in Mankato, Minn., over the weekend -- at least for
Emi Trost.
For the second straight year, Trost reigned as the top individual point producer at the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships, and for the second straight year the University of Minnesota Duluth junior All-American did so by winning three titles and setting two conference records along the way. Trost and the Bulldogs placed fourth among 13 schools at the two-day event, which concluded Saturday afternoon.
Trost successfully defended her title in the mile run, finishing in a NSIC-record time of 4:41.88, and also set a conference -- and UMD -- mark while placing first in the 600-meter run (1:32.41). Trost capped off her 30-point weekend by capturing the 1,000-meter run crown for the third time in as many tries, coming in at 2:50.92.
In addition, the Bulldogs received a NSIC record-breaking
performance from the distance medley relay team of freshmen Maria Berg, Paige DuBois and Elizabeth Kyes and senior Breanna Colbenson. That quartet came in at 12:01.42, which eclipsed the previous NSIC standard of 12:03.78 set by UMD four years ago.
Colbenson also placed behind Trost in both the mile run (4:52.94) and 1,000-meter run (4:52.94) and was fifth in the 5,000-meter run (8:12.92) while sophomore
Danielle Kohlwey took third in the 60-meter hurdles (8.56) and seventh in the 200-meter dash (25.22). UMD got fifth-place efforts from Kyes in the 800-meter run (2:17.44) and junior
Erica Kesseh in the 60-meter dash (7.76) and points from DuBois in the 600-meter run (6th place; 1:38.19), senior
Natalie Stauber in the 800-meter run (7th place; 2:18.39), freshman
Melissa Drenckhahn in the 5,000-meter run (8th place; 8:17.71) and junior
Katherine Hawkinson in the long jump (8th place; 5.48 meters).
Host Minnesota State University-Mankato captured its second consecutive team championship with 171 points and was followed by the University of Mary (103 pts.), Winona State University (100.5 pts.), UMD (82 pts.), Augustana University (48 pts.) and Concordia University-St. Paul (46.66 pts). UMD was the NSIC champion in 2014 and was fourth and third, respectively, the ensuing two years.
"Our team was focused and competed with a lot of enthusiasm the past two days," said UMD head coach
Joanna Warmington. "We had 13 season and/or career bests and came away with three conference records. so I was pleased with our results."
The top three finishers in each event and top two relay teams earned All-NSIC status.
The NSIC Indoor Track and Field Athletes and Coach of the Year will be announced later this week.
