The University of Minnesota Duluth won nine individual events at Saturday's Lake Superior Challenge on the College of St. Scholastica campus.
Posting two first-place finishes for the Bulldogs were junior
Katherine Hawkinson and sophomore
Danielle Kohlwey. Hawkinson won the long and triple jumps, leaping 17'-11" and 38'-4" (a NCAA Division II provisional qualifying mark), respectively, while Kohlwey prevailed in the 60-meter hurdles (8.57, which broke the previous UMD record which she held) and the 200-meter dash (25.8). Other winners for the Bulldogs included freshman
Sarah Harrison in the 600-meter run (1:41.26), junior
Erica Kesseh in the 60-meter dash (7.88), freshman
Maria Berg in the 1,000-meter run (3:04.74), sophomore
Michaela Hesse in the high jump (5'-1') and junior
Rachelle LeBlanc in the pole vault (10'-6'). In addition, the Bulldogs took top honors in the 4 x 400-meter relay, coming in at 4:14.81.
A handful of Bulldogs were in Fargo, N.D., Saturday for the North Dakota State University Bison Open, where the top Bulldog placer was junior
Emi Trost, who finished second in the 3,000-meter run with a school-record time of 9:31.52. That's currently the second fastest clocking in the NCAA Division II ranks and is a NCAA II provisional qualifier.
Overall, some 17 personal bests were set by Bulldog individuals on Saturday.
A busy weekend awaits UMD as various Bulldogs will compete in the Iowa State University Classic on Friday and Saturday (Feb. 10-11), the South Dakota State University Indoor Classic (Feb. 10-11), and in the Yellowjacket Open a the University of Wisconsin-Superior on Feb. 11. On Sunday and Monday, a select number of Bulldogs will pay a visit to Mankato, Minn., for the NSIC Indoor Heptathlon Championships.
