One week ago,
Danielle Kohlwey broke a University of Minnesota Duluth record that had stood for 34 years. So what did she do on Saturday for an encore? Break another.
The sophomore from Onalaska, Wis., won the 100-meter dash at the Holst Invitational in St. Paul, Minn., and did so in a meet-record time of 11.93 to break the school mark of 11.99 which Julie Hay set back at the 1983 Northern Sun Conference championships. Hay's 200-meter record that she also ran at that same conference event, was also eclipsed by Kohlwey last Saturday at the Beach Invitational in Long Beach, Calif. Kohlwey also placed third in the 400-meter hurldles (1:06.95) as did freshman Elizabeth Keyes in the 800-meter run (2:16.72). Sophomore
Abby Moore (17:55.56) and freshman
Melissa Drenckhahn (18:20.08) finished 2-3 in the 5,00-meter run, taking a backseat only to the unattached
Hannah Olson (17:44.95), a 2016 UMD graduate. In the long jump, junior
Katherine Hawkinson took second with a leap of 17'-02.75" and sophomore
Elizabeth Brunner also snared runnerup honors in the triple jump (37'-0.50") while both juniors
Amber Seidenkranz (11:34.71 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase) and
Rachelle LeBlanc (10'-06.25" in the pole vault) were fourth in their respective competitions.
UMD will send a select group of athletes to the four-day Drake Relays, which begin this Wednesday (April 26), while the majority of the Bulldogs will be in St. Peter, Minn. on Saturday (April 29) for the Drake Alternative meet.
