CANADA TOPS U.S. FOR GROUP A, OLYMPIC QUARTERFINALS SET

University of Minnesota Duluth redshirt junior goaltender Maddie Rooney got her second start for the U.S. Olympic women's hockey team Thursday, but Canada got the 2-1 win at the Kwandong Hockey Centre to claim the top spot in Group A.

26009Rooney had 21 saves in the skate, but former Bulldog All-American defenseman Jocelyne Larocque had the game-winning assist for Canada at 14:56 of the second period.  In all, five former UMD players skated in what may be a preview for the gold medal game -- Rooney and All-American defenseman Sidney Morin for the U.S., and Lacrocque, forward Haley Irwin and All-American defenseman Brigette Lacquette.

The win was the 23rd consecutive triumph for Canada at the Olympics, and the fifth-straight win over the U.S.

Both Canada and the U.S. will await the results of the quarterfinals on Saturday to find out its Monday semifinal opponent.  Canada will play the winner of the Switzerland (with UMD's Lara Stalder) and Olympic Athletes of Russia, while the U.S. will face the winner of Finland and Sweden (with Bulldogs Maria Lindh and Pernilla Winberg).
