THE TOUGH TIMES CONTINUES FOR UMD IN FLORIDA ON TUESDAY

A day of rest did not help the University of Minnesota Duluth (8-8) get back into the win column.  On Tuesday, the Bulldogs lost to Carthage (Wis.) College 15-2 and the College of Wooster, by a score of 5-3.

After UMD made history of the wrong variety on Monday – it was swept by Southwest Minnesota State University 34-1 and 9-8 in a non-conference double dip, with the 34 runs given up marking a school record – the Bulldogs found scoring hard to come by against two NCAA III opponents.

The Carthage (4-2) offense erupted from the onset in North Port at North Regional Park, in UMD's first game.  The Red Men scored the first nine runs in the game, thanks in large part to a two-run double in the first and a three-run big fly in the third frame.

The Bulldogs scored a run each in the fourth and fifth innings, but the Carthage pitching was too much to handle for the UMD batters.  Sophomore Josh Foreman was the lone Bulldog to pound out more than one hit on the day, going 2-for-4 with a run batted in.

Sophomore righty Ben Heggestad took the loss for UMD, lasting two innings, giving up seven runs on six hits.  Eric Rohe was solid on the mound for the Red Men, allowing two runs on five hits over seven frames of work.

The Bulldogs traveled to nearby Port Charlotte to face off against the College of Wooster (Ohio).  Unfortunately for the Maroon and Gold, the results were much the same.

The Fighting Scots (11-2), who held the No. 8 spot in Collegiate Baseball's 2009 NCAA III preseason poll, were able to hold UMD to just three runs, while getting on the board five times.

The Bulldogs will put the wraps on its trip to the Sunshine State tomorrow, Wednesday March 18, with a non-conference doubleheader with Southwest Minnesota State.  UMD, who is an even 4-4 so far in Florida, will hit the diamond at 9:00 a.m. against the Mustangs.
