In its last doubleheader in a six-day, 10-game Florida spring trip, the University of Minnesota Duluth was unable to get the best of Southwest Minnesota State University, losing both ends of the two-game set by scores of 10-9 and 10-3.

The Bulldogs (8-10), who won their first four games in the Sunshine State before losing the remaining six, had an 8-4 lead at one point in the opening game against the Mustangs (8-0).

UMD scored the first run of game one, thanks to a single by sophomore first baseman Josh Threlkeld, scoring senior co-captain David Olson after the Lakeville, Minn., native doubled.

SMSU plated the next four runners in the morning non-conference affair in Ft. Myers, at Terry Park Field No. 4 – via three, run-scoring singles and a sacrifice fly – helping the Mustangs to a 4-1 advantage after three full frames.

The Bulldog bats made their presence known in the top of the fourth, with the Maroon and Gold batting through the order and scoring seven runs off of six hits.  Included in the onslaught was a two-run single from sophomore infielder Jake Kluver and a grand slam from Olson.

Not to be outdone, the SMSU offense went on the attack, scoring four runs in their fourth inning at-bats and another in the fifth.

UMD was able to add a run in the sixth, deadlocking the score at 9-9.  For the second time in as many matchups between the two teams, the Mustangs would end up scoring the deciding run in their last plate appearances, guaranteeing them of the victory.

Freshman Anders Engberg – who pitched two full innings on the mound for the Bulldogs, giving up two runs on three hits – was saddled with the loss.  Tyler Paulson earned the victory for SMSU after pitching a scoreless seventh inning.

Pitching was, as it has been throughout UMD's six-game slide, the down fall for the Bulldogs, in game two.  Sophomore Josh Foreman, who fell to  lasted only 3.2 innings, allowing seven Mustangs to cross home plate, coming off of nine hits.

SMSU scored two runs each in the first and third frames, followed by three runs in the fourth and two more in the seventh, sealing a sweep of UMD in the four games between the two Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference members, this week in Florida.

Sophomore Justin Baker went a perfect 2-for-2 for the Bulldogs at the plate, scoring one run.  Olson was 1-for-3, blasting a two-run home run in the fourth.  The catcher/third baseman ended the day going 4-for-7 at the dish, driving in six runs and scoring three others.
