BULLDOGS CLAIM NORTH COUNTRY INVITATIONAL TRACK TITLES

Both the University of Minnesota Duluth captured the team titles at the inaugural North Country Invitational on Saturday afternoon at Malosky Stadium.


Senior Liz Palkie came up with her fourth best ever time in the 800-meters, winning in 2:10.92 - a national provisional quailifying time. Senior Alyssa Wendt capped a great week with a 3rd PR for the week this time getting second in the 800 at 2:14.68.


The Bulldogs had two other provisional national marks - Maria Swanson won the hammer throw at 163'- 8" with teammate Cassie Corrigan placing second at 162'-8". Carrie Wardell had a huge PR in edging Morgan Place in the 1,500 meters with a 4:43.74 clocking while place came in at 4:44.18. Those times rank second and third this season in the NSIC behind Palkie's conference-leading mark of 4:35.05


Other women highlights included: Kristin Haak - two runner finishes in the 400- and 200-meter dahes (58.56 and 26.00), Rachael Stack had a 20-second PR in the steeple chase at 11:37.3 to place second and later won the 5,000 in 19:04.61, Rebekah Kok had a season best in the 100H with 15.95 for third Taylor Hartje had s career best in the 400 high hurdles with a 66.60 mark for third, Libby Fandry had an outdoor shot PR of 41' 3" for third, Melissa Smith won the discus at 129' 11', Mallory Skoff had a PR of 117' 6" for sixth and Justina Froelich a season best of 153' 10" in the hammer for third.


On the men's side Brian Ott was a double winner taking the 400 meters in 49.57 and blazing the 200 in 21.83. Dan Kjolsing had a PR of 22.57 in the 200 for third, Grayson Hendrix had a PR of 51.47 in the 400 for third.


In the men's 800-meter run, the Bulldogs had six men finish under 2:00 and five had all time PRs - Spencer Carlson was second in 1:56.57, freshman Lou Hughes dropped his PR to 1:56.88 in finishing fourth, Mike Finnerty the leader of the race through nearly 600 meters was 1:57.11 (not a PR) Dillon Johnston had 1:57.91 for sixh, Josh Dahl's PR in 1:58.72 for seventh and freshman Steve Murat had a PR of 1:59.31.


Eric Atkinson won the 5,000 in 15:05.5, the Bulldogs had some fine running in the 400 hurdles with Chris Parno winning in 55.49 and teammate Forrest Randall was second in 55.76, Steve Milkovich won the triple jump with 43' 4" , despite jumping into a stiff wind. Tom Soldner had a solid day in the throws winning the shot in 47', placing second in the disc at 140' 1" and in the hammer at 156' 11" (a personal best). Teammate Ben Martinsen won the hammer at 166' 6", and Dan Larson won a javelin title for the fourthh time this season with a 163' 10" toss. The 4 X 200 won in 1:30.04.


Up next for the Bulldogs is the Drake Relays and Simpson Invitational in Iowa and the Drake Alternative at Gustavus later this week. The Bulldogs qualified 11 relays and Place will run the 10,000 on Thursday at Drake Relays.
