ROUGH START FOR UMD SOCCER CONTINUES WITH 2-1 LOSS TO BEMIDJI STATE ON SUNDAY

The first three games in the 2008 season have certainly proven tough for the University of Minnesota Duluth (0-3) soccer team. The Bulldogs dropped their third-straight contest on Sunday afternoon, losing 2-1 in overtime against Bemidji State University (2-0) in Marquette, Mich.

UMD made some unwanted history with the 0-3 start to the year; this is the first time in the 15-year history of the storied program that a Bulldog team has started the season losing three straight.

There was no scoring to be found for either team through the first 45 minutes of play in what was the final game of the Wildcat Soccer Invite hosted by Northern Michigan University this weekend.  That's not to say that there weren't any chances, however.  On two seperate occasions UMD players hit the cross bar over the BSU goal.

The deadlock was broken at 76:29 into the match when Briana Scanlon put a shot past Bulldog goalkeeper Hannah Bengtson to take a 1-0 lead.

Time was running short on UMD's hope for an answer when, at the 87:01 mark, sophomore Brittany Brown took a pass from fellow second-year player Becky Anderson and rocketed a shot into the back of the Beaver net, tying the game 1-1. Senior co-captain Danielle Scheuer also earned an assist on the goal, her first of the season. The goal was the first on the season for the Eau Claire, Wis. native. Anderson's three points on the year already exceed her total offensive output from the 2007 season.

Overtime was in store and the teams looked to be on course to finish the game tied up. BSU had other plans and 8:19 into the extra frame, Jamie Ford scored the game-winner, guaranteeing a winless season-opening road-trip for the Bulldogs.

"It's troubling that we lost the game in overtime," said head coach Greg Cane.  "But today we played very well and Bemidji State played very well."

UMD out shot the Beavers 17-9, although all nine of BSU's shots landed on target.

The home-opener is next up for the Bulldogs, as they welcome Mesa State College to James S. Malosky Stadium this Thursday, Sept. 4 at 5:30 p.m. The game was originally scheduled for Sept. 5 at 8 p.m., but has been pushed up.
