An early miscue proved to be too much to overcome for the University of Minnesota Duluth (0-4) soccer team on Thursday evening, as it lost 2-1 to Mesa State College at James S. Malosky Stadium in Duluth, Minn.

Sophomore goalkeeper Hannah Bengtson and the Bulldog defense had a tough time of communicating with each other and were not on the same page in the first minute of play; a pass intended for Bengtson instead found its way onto the foot of Daniela Ramirez of Mesa State.  She had little trouble putting the ball in the back of the net, to make the score 1-0 in favor of the visitors at the 00:42 mark.

The UMD attack rebounded and the next 80 minutes were tightly contested, with the Bulldogs earning multiple scoring chances.  The scoreboard read 1-0 until, at 80:36, Katrina Hartfield gained possession of a deflected pass and directed the ball into the twine of the Bulldog net.

Sophomore defender Maria Leider had the answer for UMD at 82:37 into the game, taking a pass from sophomore midfielder/forward Mallory Fox and rifling a shot past the outstretched hands of the diving Maverick goalkeeper.  The goal is number two on the year for the Duluth native and the assist for Fox is her first collegiate point.

Mesa State held on over the final 7:23, avoiding multiple chances on UMD’s part to tie the game up – including an open look for freshman midfielder/defender Molli Janni that sailed high over the crossbar.

With the 2-1 defeat, the Bulldogs have now endured four-straight losses by that score to open the 2008 season.

UMD will stay at home and next welcome Fort Lewis College to Malosky Stadium this coming Sunday, Sept. 7.  The game time is set for 12 p.m.
