Friday, September 26, 2008
The home-opening Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference soccer match for the University of Minnesota Duluth (2-6-1 overall; 2-0-1 NSIC) went off without a hitch Friday night; UMD scored early, and often, in beating the University of Minnesota, Crookston 4-0 at James S. Malosky Stadium.
Just 3:31 into the game, junior midfielder Kelly Duchene took a one-time volley from junior forward/midfielder Clare Dahmen. The goal was the first on the season for the Chanhassen, Minn., native, the assist for the team co-captain was number two.
Sophomore defender Maria Leider was the next Bulldog to in on the scoring action, heading a corner from junior defender/midfielder Hannah Nygaard past the Golden Eagle goalkeeper, at 21:49. Leider, a native of Duluth, Minn., now has three
Just minutes later, at the 23:23 mark, Dahmen was able to wrangle a loose ball and rocket it into the UMC net, notching an unassisted score. The three points on the night for Dahmen tied a career-high mark for a single game (she had two three-point games her freshman year).
The Golden Eagles (1-6-1; 0-3-0) were able to get on the board at 58:54, when Kelsey Palmer was able to chip a shot over UMD sophomore goalie Hannah Bengtson, and into the back of the net. Kayla Wallis was credited with the assist on the goal.
The Bulldogs put the game away 68:32 into the match, with sophomore forward Whitney Wilson potting her first collegiate goal. The Albert Lea, Minn., native took a feed from sophomore midfielder/forward Mallory Fox and was able to beat the UMC goalie.
UMC added a scoring strike at 82:50, with Justine Jones scoring an unassisted goal. It proved to be too little too late for the Golden Eagles, however, as UMD held on over the final seven minutes for its second NSIC victory.
With the win, the Bulldogs extend their NSIC conference unbeaten streak, dating back to the 2003 season, to 17 games.
We were looking to get some players in, get them some playing time,” said head coach Greg Cane. “We were the better team, and deserved to win, but you have to credit [UMC] for playing hard.”
UMD stays at home, welcoming Minnesota State University-Moorhead to James S. Malosky Stadium this Sunday (Sept. 28), with start time set for 1 p.m.
