SCHEUER DELIVERS THE WINNER, UMD SOCCER DEFEATS MARY 2-1 IN OVERTIME
Saturday, October 18, 2008
The University of Minnesota Duluth soccer squad disposed of the University of Mary 2-1 in the first overtime of its Saturday afternoon match at James S. Malosky Stadium in Duluth, Minn.
The meeting was the first between the two Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference schools since the 2005 season, and the first time the Bulldogs (5-8-2 overall; 6-2-2 NSIC) were able to beat the Marauders (7-8-0; 6-2-0) since 1995.
The Bulldogs had the game tempo in the palm of their hands for the entire first period, not allowing a single UM shot to find its way on to the UMD goal.
Sophomore forward Brittany Brown was able to capitalize on a perfectly placed pass from junior midfielder Kelly Duchene, and make the score 1-0 for the home team at the 8:29 mark. Brown outran a Marauder defender and deposited the ball into the left corner of the visitor's net. The goal was the fourth on the year for the Eau Claire, Wis., native, with junior forward Alex Paffrath also getting credit with a helper on the score.
UM mounted a stronger offensive attack throughout the second half and, at 79:45, it was Alyssa Deutscher who struck for the Marauders. Deutscher headed a Megan Wilson cross from the left side of the field, past UMD sophomore goalkeeper Hannah Bengtson, tying the score at 1-1 and assuring the contest would go into overtime.
Neither team was able to mount a legitimate scoring opportunity in the first OT, and a second overtime seemed imminent. UMD senior co-captain Danielle Scheuer put an end to those thoughts, however, scoring the game-winner 7:27 into the first extra frame.
Mary goalie Brannigan Coyle was unable to handle a free kick by freshman defender Reegan Lloyd, with the shot bouncing in front of the net. Scheuer - a midfielder from Cloquet, Minn. - was able to control and eventually force the ball into the twine of the Marauder net. Brown and Lloyd each earned an assist on the game-winner, which represented the first goal of 2008 for Scheuer.
Bengtson ended the game with five saves, while Coyle was able to stop four Bulldog shots.
UMD will return to Malosky Stadium tomorrow, Oct. 19, for an NSIC clash with Northern State University. The game - which marks Parent's Day for the 2008 Bulldogs - will begin at 1 p.m.
