EARLY GOAL HELPS MAKE IT A CELEBRATION ON SENIOR NIGHT, BULLDOGS BEAT BEMIDJI STATE 1-0
Friday, October 24, 2008
A goal coming just 1:42 into the match helped the University of Minnesota Duluth soccer team beat Bemidji State University 1-0 on Friday at James S. Malosky Stadium in Duluth, Minn.,
UMD - who are now 6-9-2 overall, 6-3-2 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play - wasted no time in turning on the attack against the visiting Beavers (9-7-1; 3-7-1) during the final regular season match for the home squad in 2008.
A crossed ball from the left side of the field by senior co-captain Danielle Scheuer slipped past the Beaver goalkeeper, who was trying to cut the pass attempt off. Junior forward/midfielder Clare Dahmen quickly controlled the ball and rocketed a shot into the vacant BSU net, quickly the Bulldogs ahead 1-0 in the first two minutes of the game. Junior forward Alex Paffrath was credited with an assist on the third goal of the year for the co-captain from Hopkins, Minn.
UMD was able to control the rest of the 88-plus minutes remaining in the game, out shooting BSU 20-1 overall for the contest.
The Bulldogs (who improve to 11-2-1 all-time against the Beavers) didn't allow a single BSU shot on net until 75:14 into the match. That save proved to be the only one UMD sophomore goalie Hannah Bengtson needed to make to sustain the shutout, upping the Lino Lakes, Minn., native's season total to six in the process. Samantha Ross made eight saves for the Beavers.
The Bulldogs will take the rest of the weekend off, and will finish off their regular season schedule next Saturday and Sunday (Nov. 1 and 2). UMD first will travel to Sioux Falls, S.D., to take on NSIC rival Augustana College, before moving on to Wayne, Neb., for a conference showdown with Wayne State College. Both games have a start time of 1 p.m.
