UMD AND ST. CLOUD STATE DRAW EVEN ON SATURDAY

Saturday, September 12, 2009

The University of Minnesota Duluth soccer squad's first of two games as part of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Soccer Festival ended in a 0-0 double-overtime tie against St. Cloud State University, in Sioux Fall, S.D., on Saturday.

The Bulldog (1-1-1 overall) offense nearly doubled up their NSIC rivals in total shots on the afternoon at Yankton Trail Park, finishing the match with a 33-17 advantage. UMD also placed more shots on target - 14-10 - than SCSU (1-2-2). Senior co-captain Clare Dahmen led UMD with four shots on goal, while getting off six shots in all. Junior forward Becky Anderson added five shots (one on net), while senior forward Alex Paffrath notched three shots on target, and four total.

UMD junior goalkeeper Hannah Bengtson finished the match with 10 saves, while her counterpart from SCSU, Elizabeth Kelly, made 14 stops necessary to earn her second shutout of the year. The shutout was the first for Bengtson in 2009, and seventh during her two-year role as the Maroon and Gold's starting net minder.

One of the 2009 Bulldogs' main strengths was on full display in the game: depth. Of the 22 players on this year's roster, 21 made an appearance in the game - only freshman backup goaltender Hanna Iaizzo did not play. They weren't just taking up space either; 13 players recorded at least one shot, including nine of the 10 players in the starting lineup.

The Bulldogs will play their second - and final - game of the NSIC Soccer Festival tomorrow, Sunday, Sept. 13, at 1 p.m. Southwest Minnesota State University (0-2-0) will be UMD's opponent, after losing 4-0 to Winona State University on Friday evening, in its Festival opener.
