CONFERENCE DEBUT FOR BULLDOGS EQUALS A VICTORY ON SATURDAY
Saturday, September 19, 2009
For the second time in less than a week, the University of Minnesota Duluth soccer team shutout Southwest Minnesota State University; on Saturday afternoon at James S. Malosky Stadium - in the two teams' Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference openers - the Bulldogs were winners by the same 2-0 advantage.
The possession went back and forth between the offenses to open up the game, but neither squad could put together any legitimate scoring chances.
UMD (3-1-1 overall, 1-0 NSIC) was the first to capitalize, at the 9:16 mark, when junior forward/midfielder Lauren Graydon dribbled the ball across the field and threaded a pass to senior co-captain Clare Dahmen's right foot. The Hopkins, Minn., native made one move to beat a Mustang defender and rifled a shot from 15 yards out past the SMSU (0-4-0, 0-1) goalkeeper into the left side of the visitor's goal, giving the Bulldogs an early 1-0 lead. Junior midfielder/defender Molly Nepote, along with Graydon, earned the helpers on the play.
The goal sparked the UMD offense to dominating performance the remainder of the first half, with the Bulldogs outshooting the Mustangs 8-1 the rest of the way. However, the Mustangs stood their ground and the two squads entered half time with the scoreboard still showing a 1-0 UMD advantage.
Play to open the second stanza was reminiscent of the beginning of the first half, with both offenses getting a feel for the other's defense. Bulldog junior forward Brittany Brown delivered the insurance goal at 68:19, sniping a shot that found the upper right portion of the SMSU goal's twine. Junior forward Becky Anderson and Dahmen were awarded assists on the Eau Claie, Wis., native's first goal of 2009.
UMD senior netminder Hannah Bengtson had an easy go of it in recording her third-straight shutout. The native of Lino Lakes, Minn., -- who earned NSIC Defensive Player of the Week honors for her two clean sheets last weekend - didn't have to make a save. The Bulldog defense should get some of the credit for the shutout, only allowing the Mustangs offense to get off two shots in all. UMD's offense, on the other hand, kept SMSU goalie Kendra Olchefske busy, registering 18 total shots, with six of those landing on target.
With six points (2 g, 2a) on the season, Dahmen is on the door step of placing herself in the top-ten in career goals scored and assists on the Bulldog charts. In her time in a Maroon and Gold uniform, the two-time team captain has 12 goals and 15 assists for 39 points in 56 career games played.
The next match is a big one for UMD (who was ranked fifth in the most recent NCAA Central Region Poll), as it welcomes league-leading Minnesota State University, Mankato to Malosky Stadium tomorrow (Sunday Sept. 20) for an important NSIC affair. In the two teams' first match of the season - back on Aug. 30 in Mankato, Minn., -- the Mavericks were victorious by a score of 2-0. Match time tomorrow afternoon is set 1 p.m.
