UMD SOCCER EXTENDS UNBEATEN STREAK WITH WIN OVER DRAGONS

Friday, September 25, 2009

Shutouts are becoming the norm for the University of Minnesota Duluth soccer team, with Minnesota State University-Moorhead becoming the Bulldog's latest victims on Friday night in Moorhead, Minn.  UMD (5-1-1 overall; 3-0 in NSIC) fought off every Dragon offensive push, downing the hosts 1-0 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference match up at Alex Nemzek Soccer Field.

MSU-Moorhead (4-3-1; 1-2) looked to grab the momentum early, placing the game's first three shots on net.  Junior goalie Hannah Bengtson and the rest of the Bulldogs' defensive unit withstood the opening barrage, however, allowing the UMD offense to get its legs acclimated to the wet conditions.

After their first four shots on target were denied, the fifth kick proved to be the charm for the Bulldogs, as junior forward Becky Anderson delivered the game-winner on a breakaway chance, at the 21:15 mark.  Fellow junior forward Brittany Brown and senior co-captain Clare Dahmen earned the assists on the Duluth, Minn., native's first goal of the 2009 season.

UMD's offense won the possession battle the rest of the way, as Bengtson registered her fifth-straight shutout and 11th overall, for her career.  The Bulldogs – who held down the fourth spot in the most recent NSCAA NCAA II Central Region Poll – have won their initial three NSIC games via shutout, representing the first time a UMD team has pulled off the feat since 2002.  The current six-game unbeaten streak is the program's longest since the 2003 Bulldog squad went 14 straight games without a loss (from 9/27-11/18/03).

Next up for the Bulldogs is a league clash with the University of Minnesota-Crookston (2-6-1; 0-3), this Sunday in Crookston, Minn.  The contest at Ed Widseth Field has a scheduled start time of 1 p.m.  UMD comes into the match sporting a 7-0-0 record in the series all-time.
