The University of Minnesota Duluth soccer squad may have started slow on Sunday, but it got down right offensive in the second half to defeat the University of Minnesota-Crookston 6-1, at Ed Widseth Field.

On a chilly, rainy and blustery day - wind gusts hit 35 miles per hour in Crookston, Minn., -- scoring chances were at a premium for the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference members, in the opening 45 minutes. That's not to say that the Bulldogs (6-1-1 overall; 4-0 in the NSIC) didn't give their all, directing eight of their 12 shots on target in the opening stanza, compared to just two total shots for the hosts. The two teams entered the half with the score deadlocked at 0-0.

UMD came out of the gates scorching hot after the break, potting four goals in less than four minutes; junior forward Whitney Wilson started the scoring at the 52:54 mark, with junior forward/midfielder Molly Nepote and junior forward Becky Anderson on the assists. Senior co-captain Clare Dahmen capped off the offensive outburst 58:51 into the match, with Anderson again getting a helper, this time alongside senior forward Alex Paffrath.

In between, Anderson added a goal of her own, assisted by Paffrath and senior co-captain Kelly Duchene. Sophomore defender Reegan Lloyd scored an unassisted strike from near midfield about 10 yards in front of the center dot, to build the Bulldogs' lead to 3-0.

After about a ten minute breather, UMD struck again, with freshman forward/midfielder Anna Gradeen this time getting into the mix. The Växjö, Sweden native, headed a corner kick from junior midfielder/defender Cassie Shepherd, at the 69:51 mark, scoring her first goal in a Maroon and Gold uniform.

Freshman forward/midfielder Abby Serreyn finished up the visitor's scoring at 74:24, registering an unassisted strike.

The Golden Eagles added a late goal to break the shutout at the 76:28 mark, making sure that the Bulldogs would not be recording their sixth-straight clean sheet and stymieing netminder Hannah Bengtson's bid for a 12th career shutout.

All 21 of UMD's players that made the trek to Crookston made an appearance in the game, including freshman goaltender Hanna Iaizzo - who was in net for the last 8:31 - in the first action of her collegiate career. The six goals for the Bulldogs' offense are the most for the club in a game since a 6-0 victory over Concordia University-St. Paul on August 30, 2006.

UMD will finish up its season-long four-game road trip next weekend, with two more conference contests. The Bulldogs have what might be the most important match up thus far to start the weekend, when they travel to Winona, Minn., to take on Winona State University on Friday at 7 p.m. The Warriors are three points back of league-leading UMD, and are the only other NSIC team besides the Bulldogs, to have an unblemished conference record (3-0; 6-3-0 overall).
