EARLY SCORE PROPELS NO. 23 BULLDOGS 1-0 OVER PEACOCKS

An early goal less than a minute into the game was all the scoring the No. 23-ranked University of Minnesota Duluth soccer squad needed in its 1-0 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference victory over Upper Iowa University, on Sunday afternoon in Fayette, Iowa.

Bulldog (7-2-1 overall; 4-1 NSIC) junior forward Becky Anderson picked up her third game-winning goal of the year just 00:43 into the match at Pattison Field. The Duluth, Minn., native potted a loose ball through a scramble in front of the UIU (6-6-1; 2-3 NSIC) net, off of a corner kick from senior Alex Paffrath. The score was the third on the year for Anderson, while the helper by the forward from Owatonna, Minn., was number three.

The Peacocks put on the offensive pressure multiple times over the final 89 minutes, led by forward Valeria Ptasinski's three shots on goal. The UMD defense and junior net minder Hannah Bengtson were up to the challenge, however, with the Lino Lakes, Minn., native making all seven saves necessary for her sixth shutout of the season and 12th for her career.

There was a close call for the Maroon and Gold at the end of the game, with the hosts getting the ball into the Bulldog net, mere seconds after the final horn had sounded. Play did get offensive - for the wrong reasons - throughout, with three yellow cards being handed out for unsportsmanlike conduct (one to UMD junior forward Brittany Brown at the 72:37 mark and two cautions to a pair of Peacocks).

After a Winona State University loss to Bemidji State University by a score of 2-1 on Sunday, the Bulldogs now find themselves in sole possession of second place in the NSIC soccer standings. UMD finds itself one point behind league-leading St. Cloud State University, who the Bulldogs will welcome to James S. Malosky Stadium next Sunday, Oct. 11.

UMD will first have to take care of Concordia University, St. Paul next Saturday (Oct. 10), with a 1:00 p.m., start time scheduled for the two NSIC clubs.
