BULLDOGS DROP GOLDEN BEARS 1-0 ON BLUSTERY SATURDAY AFTERNOON
Saturday, October 10, 2009
The howling winds and near freezing temperatures were not enough to slow down the University of Minnesota Duluth soccer team on Saturday afternoon, as UMD topped Concordia University, St. Paul 1-0 at James S. Malosky Stadium.
The two Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference squads came into the game looking to earn an important three points in the league standings. The Bulldogs (8-2-1 overall; 6-1 in NSIC) started the day ranked one spot ahead of the third-place Golden Bears (7-5-2; 4-2-1), by three points.
Weather conditions made it tough for either team to produce much of an offensive threat, with the possession slightly favoring UMD for the first 20 minutes of the match. Bulldog senior co-captain Clare Dahmen broke the scoreless tie, and scored the eventual game-winner at the 24:49 mark, when she placed a ball 15 yards out into the left corner of the Concorda-St. Paul net. The score was number five on the season for the Hopkins, Minn., native, with senior Alex Paffrath earning the assist on Dahmen's third game-winning strike of 2009.
UMD held on tight over the final 65 minutes, not allowing the Golden Bears much of an opportunity to knot the score up. The final shot totals were as tight as the contest, with the Maroon and Gold holding a slim 11-10 advantage in total shots, while directing six shots on net, to Concordia-St. Paul's five.
Bulldog junior netminder Hannah Bengtson made all five saves necessary to record her seventh shutout of the season, and 13th for her career. The seven clean sheets on the year for the native of Lino Lakes, Minn., are the most by a UMD goalkeeper since Briana Francisco turned in eight shutouts during the 2006 season.
With a 2-1 St. Cloud State University win over Bemidji State University also on Saturday afternoon, the Bulldogs still find themselves in second-place in the NSIC standings, one point behind the Huskies. Not much needs to be said, then, about the importance of UMD's next match - against those same Huskies - tomorrow afternoon. The duel has a scheduled start time of 1 p.m., at James S. Malosky Stadium.
