Senior co-captain notched her fourth game-winning goal of the season

Senior co-captain Clare Dahmen buried her fourth game-winning goal of the season in propelling the league-leading University of Minnesota Duluth over Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference foe Northern State University 2-1, on Saturday afternoon in Aberdeen, S.D.

With the victory, UMD’s record now stands at 10-2-1 overall, and 8-1 in NSIC play.  The 2009 Bulldogs are the 10th team in school history to break the double-digit plateau in the wins column, and the first since the 2003 squad went 14-3-3 on their way to both an NSIC regular season and tournament championship.

The visitors grabbed the early 1-0 lead, thanks to junior forward/midfielder Lauren Graydon’s snipe at the 3:32 mark.  Senior forward Alex Paffrath tapped the ball to the Thunder Bay, ONT., native off of a corner kick; Graydon dribbled once and launched a strike from the right side, just under where the goal post and cross bar meet, in the left corner of the NSU (5-5-5; 3-2-3 in NSIC) net.  The score was the second on the season for Graydon (a season-high during her UMD career).

Ball possession was in the Bulldogs’ favor for the remainder of the half – the Maroon and Gold out shot the hosts by a total of 11-4 in the stanza – but the Wolves kept them off of the board, and UMD settled for maintaining a 1-0 margin as the halftime whistle blew.

NSU tied the game up 20 minutes into the second half (66:43 mark), when Wolves defender Renee Gittings recorded her first goal of her collegiate career.  Forward Kaylee McDonald launched a long cross from the left side that Gittings threaded into the right side of the goal, beating UMD netminder Hannah Bengtson.  The strike broke an opponent’s scoreless streak of 363:13 for the junior from Lino Lakes, Minn.

The Bulldogs responded just 1:13 later, when Dahmen delivered her fourth game-winner in conference play (tied for second most in the NSIC).  Senior co-captain Kelly Duchene played the ball to Paffrath on the far wing, who proceeded to dish it to Dahmen at the top of the box.  The team-leader in goals and total points in 2009, all at once, turned and rifled a shot past the Wolves netminder, tickling the twine on the far side of the NSU net.

The two-assist day for Paffrath was her second two-point day of the year (she had two assists in UMD’s 6-1 win over the University of Minnesota-Crookston on Sept. 27) and upped the Owatonna, Minn., native’s team-leading total to six helpers.

It’s on to Bismarck, N.D., for the Bulldogs and a clash with league-rival the University of Mary tomorrow (Sunday, Oct. 18).  The start time for the pivotal NSIC match is scheduled for 1 p.m.
