FRIDAY AFTERNOON 1-1 TIE FOR NO. 25 UMD AND BEMIDJI STATE
Friday, October 23, 2009
An early goal was not enough for the No. 25-ranked University of Minnesota Duluth soccer squad against Bemidji State University on Friday afternoon, as the two Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference members tied 1-1, at the BSU Soccer Field in Bemidji, Minn.
The Bulldogs (11-2-2 overall; 9-1-1 in NSIC) jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the 10th minute, when senior co-captain Kelly Duchene used her left cleat to one-time a corner kick from fellow senior, forward Alex Paffrath into the back of the goal. The scoring strike was the first on the year for the midfielder from Chanhassen, Minn., while it was Paffrath's team-leading seventh assist for 2009.
BSU (9-6-1; 5-5-1) got a little help in tying up the game at the 33:45 mark. UMD junior goalie Hannah Bengtson misplayed a bouncing Beaver shot in front of the net with her foot and was unable to regroup and stop it from crossing the back line. Beaver junior Ashlee Ellefsen was credited with the goal, making her BSU's all-time career leader in points with 72, in the process.
For the game, the Bulldogs nearly doubled up the hosts in the shot department – they booted 24 total to the Beavers' 13 – and directed 10 balls on target, compared to four for BSU.
With the point, Paffrath extends her current points streak to three games. The Owatonna, Minn., native has registered at least one point in six of UMD's last eight games.
The Maroon and Gold have the rest of the weekend off, and will prepare for the final pair of matches of the regular season, next weekend. UMD will welcome Wayne State College to James S. Malosky Stadium next Friday (Oct. 30) night, before celebrating Senior Day on Sunday afternoon with a clash against Augustana College. Game time is set for 6 p.m., on Halloween eve, while a 1:00 p.m., is slated on Sunday.
