NO. 12 UMD OPENS NSIC PLAY IN STYLE, CRUISE PAST GOLDEN EAGLES

Determined to open their 2008 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference volleyball schedule with a bang, No. 12-ranked University of Minnesota Duluth cruised to a 3-1 (25-15, 25-21, 26-28, 25-16) victory over the University of Minnesota Crookston Friday night at Lysaker Gymnasium in Crookston, Minn.


The Bulldogs (10-3 overall; 1-0 NSIC), who were engaging in their first NSIC assignment in five years, quickly disposed of the Golden Eagles with a strong attack up front.


As a team, UMD totaled 47 kills, 18 more than Minnesota-Crookston could muster and tallied 13 blocks on the night compared with six by the Golden Eagles (0-11; 0-2).


Freshman outside hitter Hannah Johnson led UMD with team-highs in both kills and digs, where she posted 12 in each category, to go along with her two block assists. Freshman middle blocker April Hansen and sophomore outside hitter Jamie Lakatos also chipped in eight kills while senior middle blocker Lindsey Clairmont added seven. Senior setter Katie Gangelhoff and junior middle blocker Sarah Wyffels got involved with the fun, as they each finished with six kills a piece in helping UMD run its lifetime record to 13-0 against Minnesota-Crookston.


Gangelhoff collected game-highs in both hit percentage, where she hit .455, and set assists, where she set 39 balls, 17 more than the Golden Eagles had as a team.


Junior defensive specialist Rachel Jacobson also dug 11 balls, as sophomore outside hitter Brenda Hansen tallied ten digs in their NSIC opener.


Clairmont led the Bulldogs in the block column as she assisted on nine blocks, while A. Hansen had six and Wyffels added five block assists.


UMD will be back in action tomorrow afternoon when it hits the hardwood against the Dragons of Minnesota State University -Moorhead.
