Saturday, September 20, 2008
In their second volleyball match of the weekend, No. 12-ranked University of Minnesota Duluth showed no signs of fatigue, as they quickly destroyed Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference colleague Minnesota State University-Moorhead 3-0 (25-20, 25-23, 25-12) Saturday afternoon at Alex Nemzek Hall in Moorhead, Minn.
The Bulldogs (11-3 overall; 2-0 NSIC) used captain leadership, in senior setter Katie Gangelhoff, senior middle blocker Lindsey Clairmont and junior middle blocker Sarah Wyffels, to guide them to victory.
Wyffels was the head of the attack as she tallied ten kills, seven digs and four block assists, to go along with her eye-popping .714 hit percentage. Clairmont added a game-high 12 kills, for a .375 hit percentage, as Gangelhoff collected 38 set assists and 15 digs in the Bulldog victory.
Freshman outside hitter Hannah Johnson also contributed on the afternoon, as she pounded home eight kills, 11 digs and three block assists, while junior defensive specialist Rachel Jacobson dug ten balls for UMD.
As a team, the Bulldogs totaled 46 kills, 15 more than Minnesota-Moorhead could collect, as well as 58 digs on the afternoon compared with the 35 by the Dragons (8-7; 2-1).
UMD will now head home, as they will be back in action Tuesday (Sept. 23), when they collide with NSIC foe, University of Mary (Bismarck, N.D.), here at Romano Gymnasium at 6:00 p.m.
