OH SWEEP MARY! NO. 14 BULLDOGS DESTROY MARAUDERS
Tuesday, September 23, 2008
In their third Northern Sun Intercollegiate volleyball match of the season, No. 14-ranked University Minnesota Duluth stayed perfect in conference play, as they swept the University of Mary 3-0 (25-18, 25-23, 25-12) in front of 404 fans Tuesday night at Romano Gymnasium.
The Bulldogs (12-3 overall; 3-0 NSIC) used a strong attack up front throughout the entire match, putting Mary (3-13; 1-3) down quickly, and sending the Marauders home early.
UMD was led by junior middle blocker Sarah Wyffels, who added to her impressive 2008 resume, by securing game-highs in both kills and hit percentage. In the win, the Marshall, Minn. native pounded home 17 kills, while she posted an amazing .630 hit percentage.
Bulldog senior middle blocker Lindsey Clairmont also had a great performance on the hardwood as she collected a .526 hit percentage to go along with her 12 kills and game-high five block assists.
Freshman outside hitter Hannah Johnson also added to the fun as she tallied six kills, two block assists and a game-high 11 digs, while senior Katie Gangelhoff had another stellar performance from the setter position, setting 37 balls in the win, 14 more than Marauders could gather as a team.
The Bulldogs will continue their home stand this week at Romano Gymnasium, as they are set to collide with two more NSIC foes, when they go up against the University of Upper Iowa on Friday evening (Sept. 26) at 7:00 p.m., followed by a clash with Winona State University Saturday afternoon (Sept. 27) at 4:00 p.m.
