Friday, October 3, 2008

Aimed at continuing their winning ways in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, the No. 13-ranked University of Minnesota Duluth volleyball team came out flat-footed after their long bus ride, as they were swept by Wayne State College 3-0 (19-25, 22-25, 23-25) in front of 458 fans at Rice Auditorium Friday night in Wayne, Neb.

The loss was the Bulldogs (14-4 overall; 5-1 NSIC) first conference blemish of the season, as they were out-played in nearly every aspect of the game. Throughout the match, Wayne State (13-3; 3-3) posted more kills, digs and assists than UMD, while they collected a higher hit percentage and committed less attack errors than the Bulldogs on the night.

Junior middle blocker Sarah Wyffels continued to produce on the court, as she led UMD with a team-high 12 kills, four digs and three block assists, while freshman middle blocker April Hansen had a solid night, pounding home seven kills and three block assists to go along with her stellar .389 hit percentage.

Freshman outside hitter Hannah Johnson also added eight kills, ten digs and a block assist, while senior middle blocker Lindsey Clairmont recorded six kills and three block assists in the loss.

Senior setter Katie Gangelhoff tallied 36 set assists on the night, as junior defensive specialist Rachel Jacobson posted a team-leading 17 digs, while sophomore outside hitter Brenda Hansen dug 12 balls against the Wildcats.

The Bulldogs will now travel to Sioux Falls, S.D. as they are set to tango with NSIC colleague No. 23 Augustana College (12-6; 5-1). The first serve will be at 5:30 p.m. in the Elmen Center, a venue where the Vikings have yet to lose at.
