Buoyed by a pair of top 10 individual finishers, the University of Minnesota Duluth placed third among 22 schools in men's division of the St. Olaf Invitational Saturday morning in Northfield, Minn., while the Bulldog women also turned in a strong showing, winding up fourth in the 24-team field.

For the second straight week in the young 2012 season, senior captain Cole Toepfer led the way for UMD men, placing fifth overall out of 295 runners with a 8K time of 26:04.6 while sophomore Dan Nielsen was three spots behind, crossing the finish line at 26:15.1. Senior Ryan Eason (25th place; 26:58.8), junior Aaron Handorff (27:08.2) and rookie Ted Hiekkila (39th; 27:28.4) were the Bulldogs' next three finishers. Fellow Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference colleague Minnesota State University-Mankato took the team title and host St. Olaf captured second place honors.

Kaelyn Williams, competing in just her second collegiate race, was again the top point-getter for the UMD women, clocking in at 22:50.0 -- good for a seventh place among 381 individuals. She was followed in the 6K race by senior Alyssa Salava (20th; 22:29.3), sophomore Alexandra Rudin (22nd; 23:38.8), freshman Hannah Olson (23:50.5) and sophomore Amanda Boman (23:54.4). St. Olaf College, Minnesota State-Mankato and Carleton College went 1-2-3, respectively, in the team competition.

Both the Bulldog men and women will be off until Sept. 29 when they take part in the prestigious Griak Invitational, hosted by the University of Minnesota.
