September 10, 1997. University of Minnesota Duluth Chancellor, Kathryn A. Martin and Athletic Director, Bob Corran, announced that Women’s Division I Hockey would be making its debut at UMD for the 1999-2000 season.
April 20, 1998 Shannon Miller, the head coach of the Team Canada at the 1998 Winter Olympics, was hired as the head coach for the Bulldogs Women’s Hockey Team.
October 1, 1999 UMD played their first exhibition game in Salt Lake City, UT against the Olympic Oval Team (Calgary, ALTA) - opening the new hockey facility for the 2002 Olympic Games.
October 8, 1999 The Bulldogs played the Wisconsin Badgers in the first ever Women’s WCHA conference game at the Kohl Center in Madison, WI. It was the highest attended game of the season (3,892) and resulted in an 8-0 Bulldog bashing of the Badgers.
October 15, 1999 UMD Women’s Hockey debuted at the DECC with exhibition games versus the Finnish Junior National Team (L, 4-1).
November 22, 1999 Freshman forward Maria Rooth (Angelholm, Sweden), was selected as Player of the Week in the WCHA, the first for UMD.
December 10, 1999 UMD’s season-starting winning streak of 12 games, was snapped by Princeton University with a 2-2 tie in Princeton, NJ.
January 14, 2000 The New York Times ran a feature on the UMD Women’s Hockey Team. The article, titled “From Nothing a Great Team Rises,” was a first for any UMD athletic team to be in the New York Times.
January 22, 2000 UMD won the Lake Placid Tournament hosted by St. Lawrence University. Freshman goalie Tuula Puputti, freshman forward Hanne Sikio and junior defenseman Brittny Ralph were named to the All-Tournament Team. Sikio was also selected as the Tournament MVP.
February 10, 2000 The UMD Women’s Hockey Team is featured in the USA Today newspaper in an article titled “Storming Into Enemy Territory.”
February 11, 2000 The Minnesota Gophers hand the Bulldogs their first conference loss 4-3 in a sold out game at Pioneer Hall (Duluth, MN) due to conflicting events scheduled at the DECC.
February 26, 2000 The Bulldogs’ clinch the Women’s WCHA Regular Season Championship title with a sweep of Minnesota State-Mankato and earn the number one seed for the WCHA playoffs.
March 1, 2000 Numerous Bulldog players were honored at the first ever Women’s WCHA Awards Banquet at Planet Hollywood in Bloomington, MN. Player of the Year: Jenny Schmidgall, Rookie of the Year: Maria Rooth, Coach of the Year: Shannon Miller, All-WCHA First Team: Jenny Schmidgall and Maria Rooth All-WCHA Second Team: Hanne Sikio, All-WCHA Academic Team: Kellie Frick, Erin Nagurski.
March 4, 2000 UMD wins the Women’s WCHA Playoff Championship by defeating the Minnesota Gophers 2-0 at the Bloomington Ice Gardens (Bloomington, MN) and UMD goalie Tuula Puputti was voted playoff MVP. This victory earned the Bulldogs a bid to the AWCHA Final Four to compete for the National Championship hosted by Northeastern University in Boston, MA.
March 23, 2000 Jenny Schmidgall who led the nation in scoring (41-52-93) was honored at the American Hockey Coaches Association Awards Banquet. She was voted to the AWCHA All-American Team. Her and fellow teammate Maria Rooth were also nominees for the Patty Kazmaier Award as top collegiate women’s hockey player.
March 25, 2000 UMD finished fourth in the country after losing to Dartmouth College 5-4, in the third place game of the National Championships. A day earlier the Bulldogs were bumped out of the championship game with a 3-2 loss to Minnesota. UMD finished the season with 25-5-3 record.
March 7, 2001 Numerous Bulldogs were honored at the second annual Women’s WCHA Tournament Banquet. All-WCHA First Team: Maria Rooth and Hanne Sikio, All-WCHA Second Team: Tuula Puputti, All-WCHA Academic Team, the Bulldogs had the most with 12: Laurie Alexander, Jessi Flink, Kellie Frick, Erika Holst, Michelle McAteer, Shannon Mikel, Pamela Pachal, Brittny Ralph, Maria Rooth, Navada Russell, Hanne Sikio and Jessica Smith.
March 10, 2001 UMD wins their second consecutive WCHA Playoff Championship by defeating Ohio State 3-0 in Rochester, MN. Maria Rooth achieved the Most Valuable Player honor of the tournament while forward Erika Holst and defenseman Navada Russell were named to the all-tournament team.
March 25, 2001 UMD takes the inaugural NCAA Division I National Championship by defeating St. Lawrence University 4-2. This marks the first ever NCAA team championship at UMD. Maria Rooth was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament while her teammates Tuula Puputti and Brittny Ralph were named to the all-tournament team.
June 25, 2001 UMD women’s hockey team was honored at the White House by President George W. Bush. The Bulldogs were the first ever women’s hockey team to be invited to the White House.
October 5-6, 2001 Bulldogs head coach Shannon Miller, forwards Erika Holst, Maria Rooth, Hanne Sikio and goaltender Tuula Puputti represented UMD in the first-ever WCHA All-Star Team. The team played two exhibition games against the U.S. National Team.
November 6, 2001 Patricia Sautter received the USCHO Defensive Player of the Week and the WCHA Rookie of the Week honors after helping the Bulldogs to sweep University of Wisconsin in an away series with 1-0 and 2-1 wins.
November 26, 2001 Hanne Sikio got the Bulldogs first ever USCHO Offensive Player of the Week recognition and her second career WCHA Player of the Week honors.
December 2, 2001 The 2001 National Champions were honored by the Minnesota Wild at the Xcel Energy Center.
January 28, 2002 Maria Rooth got her first USCHO Offensive Player of the Week honor.
February 2-22, 2002 Five Bulldogs traveled to Salt Lake City to compete with their respective national teams at the 2002 Winter Olympic Games. From the 2001-2002 roster, forwards Maria Rooth and Erika Holst played for bronze medal winner Sweden, forward Hanne Sikio and goaltender Tuula Puputti skated for fourth-place Finland and Kristina Petrovskaia finished fifth with Team Russia. UMD also had two players in the Olympic final game, a 2001-2002 newcomer and Olympic gold medallist Caroline Ouellette (Canada) and returning Bulldog and 2002 Olympic silver medallist Jenny Potter (USA).
February 5, 2002 Maria Rooth was named one of the top 10 candidates for the Patty Kazmaier Award for the third consecutive season.
February 23, 2002 UMD had it’s 50th WCHA win in just their third year of WCHA competition.
March 7, 2002 Maria Rooth made the All-WCHA First Team and Erika Holst was the All-WCHA Second Team selection. Five Bulldogs were honored with WCHA All-Academic honors: Laurie Alexander, Jessi Flink, Michelle McAteer, Tuula Puputti, Maria Rooth.
March 9, 2002 Hanne Sikio was named the WCHA All Tournament Team forward.
March 21, 2002 Forward Maria Rooth received 2001-2002 All-American honors for a second-straight year.
March 24, 2002 The Bulldogs make women’s hockey history by winning the NCAA title for a second straight year after defeating Brown University 3-2 in the final of the 2002 NCAA National Championship Tournament, held in Durham, NH The star of the game was sophomore forward Tricia Guest, who scored an unassisted game-winning goal at 15:04 of the third period. UMD goaltender Patricia Sautter played in net recording a season high 33 saves. UMD forward Joanne Eustace and defenseman Larissa Luther were selected to the 2002 NCAA All-Tournament Team.
April 2, 2002 The Bulldogs were honored for their athletic and academic achievements at the State Capitol, where resolutions were read, authorized by State Representative Tom Huntley and State Senator Yvonne Prettner-Solon.
May 16, 2002 Maria Rooth was named to the Verizon Academic All-District At-Large second team.
May 6, 2002 The 2002 National Champions were recognized by the Minnesota Twins baseball team at the H.H.H. Metrodome in Minneapolis, MN.
May 9, 2002 The Bulldogs were honored by the Regents of University of Minnesota and President Mark G. Yudolf.
May 21, 2002 The two-time National Champions traveled to Washington D.C. to be honored by President George W. Bush for the second consecutive time.
November 11, 2002Patricia Sautter was USCHO Defensive Player of the Week and WCHA Defensive Player of the Week after shutting out Ohio State twice (Nov. 8 & Nov. 9) and adding 33 saves to her career total.
December 3, 2002 Tricia Guest was USCHO Offensive Player of the Week tallying four points.
December 10, 2002 Jenny Potter was USCHO Offensive Player of the Week.
January 14, 2003 Caroline Ouellette was USCHO Offensive Player of the Week, the third Bulldog to gain the honor in the 2002-03 season.
Jan-28-2003 Maria Rooth becomes the fourth player to gain USCHO Offensive Player of the Week honors.
February 22, 2003 Maria Rooth set the school record for points. During the game against Bemidji State Rooth scored one goal and one assist to claim the record. She ended the season with 232 total points including 119 goals.
February 23, 2003 The Bulldogs clinch the WCHA regular season title with a win over Bemidji State.
March 6, 2003 Jenny Potter, Caroline Ouellette, and Krista McArthur made the All-WCHA First Team and Maria Rooth and Erika Holst was the All-WCHA Second Team selection. Caroline Ouellette and Krista McArthur are named to the WCHA All-Rookie Team. Seven Bulldogs were honored with WCHA All-Academic honors: Erika Holst, Satu Kiipeli, Michelle McAteer, Jenny Potter, Maria Rooth, Patricia Sautter and Juliane Vasichek.
March 7, 2003 Jenny Potter was named a Patty Kazmaier Finalist for the second time in her career.
March 8, 2003 The Bulldogs earned their third WCHA Final Five title with a win over Minnesota (5-3). Erika Holst and Patricia Sautter were named to the All-Tournament team. Caroline Ouellette was named the tournaments Most Valuable Player.
March 23, 2003 UMD make women’s hockey history again by winning their third straight NCAA title after defeating Harvard in a double overtime win 4-3. The game was held in Duluth, MN in front of the largest crowd in women’s hockey NCAA history (5,167). Nora Tallus scored the game winning gaol 4:19 into the second overtime after taking four penalties during regulation. Forward Jenny Potter and Hanne Sikio were named to the All-Tournament team, while Caroline Ouellette was named the tournaments Most Valuable Player.
March 23, 2003 Jenny Potter earned First Team All-American honors for the second time in her career. Maria Rooth was also named Second Team All-American.
June 17, 2003 The Bulldogs were honored for the third time at the White House by President George W. Bush.
December 1, 2003 Jenny Potter USCHO.com Offensive Player of the week for the second time in her career. Potter tallied three goals and three assists against Dartmouth.
January 12, 2004 Noemie Marin earned her first USCHO.com Offensive Player of the Week honor for her three goal performance against the University of Minnesota.
February 9, 2004 Jenny Potter and Caroline Ouellette were named Patty Kazmaier Top-10 Finalists. The honor is the fourth for Potter and the first for Ouellette.
March 12, 2004 Jenny Potter and Julianne Vasichek were named to the All-WCHA First Team, while Caroline Ouellette was named to the Second Team. Jessica Koizumi and Noemie Marin were honored with WCHA ALL-Rookie honors. Potter, Ouellette, Vasichek, Tricia Guest, Shannon Kasparek, and Satu Kiipeli were all named to the WCHA All-Academic Team.
March 14, 2004 Jenny Potter and Krista McArthur were named to the WCHA Final Five All-Tournament Team.
March 29, 2004 Jenny Potter and Caroline Ouellette were honored with JOFA All-American First Team honors, while Julianne Vasichek was named to the Second Team.
March 15, 2004 Jenny Potter is named a Patty Kazmaier Top-3 Finalist for the second straight season.
March 27, 2004 Jenny Potter is named the 2003-2004 Patty Kazmaier Runner-Up.
November 9, 2004 Riitta Schaublin is named the USCHO.com Defensive Player of the Week after helping the Bulldogs to a series sweep of Wisconsin at the DECC. Schaublin stopped 63 of 67 shots faced in the series.
November 23, 2004 Riitta Schaublin is named USCHO.com Defensive Player of the Week for a second time in the 2004-2005 season for the second straight week of competition for UMD. Schaublin earned the honor for her performance against Minnesota, recording 62 saves.
December 7, 2004 Jessica Koizumi becomes the second Bulldog in 2004-2005 to earn USCHO.com honors, as she is named the Offensive Player of the Week after tallying two goals in each of UMD’s games against Harvard.
February 7, 2005 Caroline Ouellette becames the third UMD player to be named a Patty Kazmaier Top-10 Finalist for two straight seasons.
March 1, 2005 Riitta Schaublin makes history as the only player in 2004-2005 and the only Bulldog to be named USCHO.com Defensive Player of the week three times in the same season for being only the second goaltender to hold off Minnesota to earn a victory in 2004-2005.
March 3, 2005 Caroline Ouellette is named UMD’s first ever WCHA Student-Athlete of the Year, while also earning a spot on the All-WCHA First Team with Riitta Schaublin. Julianne Vasichek and Noemie Marin are named to the Second Team, and Rachael Drazan is an All-Rookie Team selection. Ouellette, Marin, Schaublin, and Vasichek are joined by Jessica Koizumi, Jills Sales, Meghan Stotts, Nora Tallus, and Suvi Vacker on the All-Academic Team.
March 6, 2005 Caroline Ouellette is named to the WCHA All-Tournament Team.
March 14, 2005 Caroline Ouellette becomes the second Bulldog to be named a Patty Kazmaier Top-3 Finalist.
March 23, 2005 Caroline Ouellette is honored with the USCHO.com Sportsmanship Award and Second Team selection, while Riitta Schaublin is named the sites Most Improved Player and a First Team selection. Julianne Vasichek is named to the Third Team, and Rachael Drazan is an All-Rookie Team pick.
March 28, 2005 Caroline Ouellette is named a CCM All-America First Team selection for the second straight season. Julianne Vasichek is named to the second team, also for the second straight season.
October 14, 2005Minnesota Duluth sets new school record for the fastest two power-play goals in a game, just 42 seconds apart. The goals were scored by then-freshman Tawni Mattila and then-junior Jessica Koizumi in the third period of the game against St. Cloud State University.
October 15, 2005 The Bulldogs continued their record breaking series with St. Cloud State University with a new record for the fastest two goals in a game, just six seconds apart. In the third period, then-junior Jessica Koizumi and then-freshman Mari Pehkonen combined for goals at 3:39 and 3:45.
October 21, 2005 Riitta Schaublin set one of her many UMD career records against Ohio State University when she recorded her 1,310th career save. The marker gave her the all-time saves record at UMD.
October 29, 2005 The Bulldogs handed the University of Minneosta their largest-margin of defeat and the first-ever shut-out at Ridder Arena with a 6-0 victory.
November 29, 2005 Noemie Marin is named USCHO.com Offensive Player of the Week for her seven point weekend against Harvard University.
December 3, 2005 Riitta Schaublin becomes the Bulldogs all-time winningest goaltender with her 45th career victory (45-16-3) against Minnesota State University, Mankato.
February 10, 2006 Krista McArthur becomes the Bulldogs all-time leading defensive scorer. In the 8-0 victory over the University of North Dakota, McArthur tallied two assists to give her a career total of 91 points.
February 22, 2006 UMD has five student-athletes named to the inaugral group of WCHA Scholar-Athletes. The Bulldog reciepants included: Rachel Bertam, Jessica Koizumi, Noemie Marin, Riitta Schaublin and Suvi Vacker.
March 8, 2006 Riitta Schaublin becomes UMD’s second WCHA Student-Athlete of the Year in as many years. She was also earned a spot on the All-WCHA First Team. Noemie Marin was named to the Second eam along with Rachael Drazan. Michaela Lanzl was named to the Third Team as well as the Rookie Team.
March 13, 2006 Riitta Schaublin, a junior goaltender from Switzerland, becomes the first-ever Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award top-three finalist to hail from outside of North America. Noemie Marin was among the top 10 Finalists.
May 25, 2006 For the second time in University of Minnesota Duluth women’s hockey history a player was named to the ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA All-District 5 University Division First-Team. Junior goaltender Riitta Schaublin joined former Bulldog Caroline Ouellette as a district first team pick.
June 15, 2006 Junior goaltender Riitta Schaublin secures ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America honors. Schaublin was a second team pick on the Women’s At-Large Team, which is comprised of NCAA Division I athletes from all sports with the exception of volleyball, track and cross country, softball and basketball.
October 28, 2006 UMD blazes out to its second-best start in program history after rolling over St. Cloud State 6-0 in St. Cloud, Minn. to push its record to 8-0 on the season.
November 24,2006 The Bulldogs snap No. 1 Wisconsin’s 26-game unbeaten streak by stunning the Badgers 2-0 in Madison, Wisc.
November 28, 2006 Freshman goaltender Kim Martin is named the USCHO Defensive Player of the Week after she backstops the Bulldogs to a 2-0 win over No. 1 Wisconsin, snapping its program’s winning streak of 26 games. Martin makes 25 saves in the outing.
Jananuary 23, 2007 Senior goaltender Riitta Schaublin grabs USCHO Defensive Player of the Week honors after making 46 saves in two wins over Bemidji State, including a 5-0 clean-sheet.
February 1, 2007 UMD has three student-athletes named to the second annual group of WCHA Scholar Athletes. The Bulldog honorees include Jessica Koizumi, Riitta Schaublin and Myriam Trepanier.
February 6, 2007 For a second time in the 2006-07 season, Kim Martin is named the USCHO Defensive Player of the Week. Martin stops 32 of 33 shots from No. 2 Wisconsin to force a 1-1 tie at the DECC. The freshman goaltender is the only one in the nation to have limited the Badgers to two goals, a feat she has accomplished in every outing against Wisconsin so far this year.
February 18, 2007 The Bulldogs complete their first sweep of the Gophers since the 2002-03 season, burying Minnesota 7-1 and 5-1 at Mars Lakeview Arena before the 12th and 13th biggest crowds in UMD program history (1,427 and 1,372, respectively).
February 19, 2007 Noemie Marin, a senior forward for the Bulldogs, is named a top 10 finalist for the 2007 Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award for a second-straight season.
March 1, 2007 Riitta Schaublin continues UMD’s stronghold on the WCHA Outstanding Student-Athlete of the Year award, taking home the honor for a second-consecutive year. The two-time award winner joins former Bulldog Caroline Ouellette as the third-straight UMD player to earn the distingushed blessing. Senior Noemie Marin is named to the All-WCHA First Team, while freshman goaltender Kim Martin is named to the All-WCHA Second Team. Senior forward Jessica Koizumi grabs All-WCHA Third Team honors, while freshman forward Saara Tuominen joins Martin on the All-WCHA Rookie Team.
March 9, 2007 UMD earns its fourth trip to a final four in program history by upsetting Mercyhurst College 3-2 in overtime in the NCAA Quaterfinals in Canton, Ohio in front of a crowd of 1,350. Senior forward Jessica Koizumi extends her Bulldog career by netting the game-winner, her second goal of the game. Senior goaltender Riitta Schaublin makes a Bulldog-record 44 saves in the thrilling victory.
March 15, 2007 Senior forward Noemie Marin is named to the All-USCHO Third Team.
March 16, 2007 The Bulldogs create a “Miracle” of their own in the 2007 Final Four in Lake Placid, New York by knocking off Boston College in double-overtime 4-3 to secure a berth in the NCAA Frozen Four Championship game. Senior forward Jessica Koizumi continued her late-game heroics by scoring the game-winner at 14:19 of the second-overtime. The goal was Koizumi’s second of the game, and fourth in two games.
March 18, 2007 The exhausted Bulldogs fall in the NCAA Frozen Four championship game to Wisconsin 4-1. UMD senior Jessica Koizumi is named to the NCAA Frozen Four All-Tournament Team.
October 14, 2007 UMD jumps out to its best start in program history, postng four shut-outs in its first four outings.
October 23, 2007 The Bulldogs become the No. 1 ranked team in the country after tying up then No. 2 Mercyhurst College 1-1 in overtime and then handing the Lakers a 3-1 loss the next day. It is the first time the Maroon and Gold has held the No. 1 ranking since December 6, 2005.
November 17, 2007 Sophomore goaltender Kim Martin shatters a UMD record for most saves in a game, holding Minnesota at bay by making 50 stops, including a penalty shot, in a 5-0 victory over the Gophers. Martin is named a WCHA Defensive Player of the Week for her effort, and becomes the fifth WCHA Player of the Week to come from the Bulldog roster in a month.
