Romano Gymnasium

Distinct home-court advantages are essential to any winning program, and the University of Minnesota Duluth’s Romano Gymnasium is no exception for the Bulldogs’ volleyball squad.

Since 1977, UMD has won 86.2 percent of its games in Romano Gymnasium compiling a mark of 283-45. The Bulldogs have recorded six perfect seasons (1979, 1980, 1989, 1991, 1993 and 1994, 2006) and have lost just one match a season on 12 other occasions. Only once in 25 years have the Bulldogs failed to be above .500 at home (1992).

Romano Gymnasium opened with a 73-72 men’s basketball triumph against Gustavus Adolphus College on December 12, 1953. The 2,759 seat facility underwent an extensive $2 million face lift following the 1986-87 season and was renamed in February 1988 in honor of the late Ralph Romano, UMD’s Director of Intercollegiate Athletics from 1969 to 1983.
